“They would not move me out of this land. Ever since I was brought here when I was a girl on this land, I worked on this land. Right now, I am an old lady with gray hair and they want to take away my land. I will not allow that.”

Kalementina is a brave widow living in Northern Uganda. She fled her land during a war, only to return years later to find a neighbor attempting to claim it as his own.

One day, Kalementina saw her neighbor measuring the land and showing it to people with hopes of selling it. Furious, she told officials about the injustice taking place on her own property. Nothing was done.

After years of verbal threats, disputes, and false claims in court, her neighbor came with a mob and destroyed 15 huts on her property. They threatened her with violence, showing up at her home with machetes and cutting down her crops and trees.

Intent on getting justice, Kalementina struggled to find an organization in the area with the expertise she needed to fight back against the men who were harassing her. But once she found IJM, we helped her build a strong case against the violent men and took them to court.

Today, Kalementina is as resilient as ever, saying, “They would not move me out of this land. Ever since I was brought here when I was a girl on this land, I worked on this land. Right now, I am an old lady with gray hair and they want to take away my land. I will not allow that.”
